CompuGain Partners with Dreams for Kids DC for Washington Nationals Extreme Recess Event

May 14, 2012  Herndon, Virginia – As part of its community relations program, CompuGain has developed a partnership with Dreams for Kids, a global nonprofit children’s charity.  Since its founding in 1989, Dreams for Kids has worked to dismantle social barriers and to empower at-risk youth and those with developmental and physical disabilities through dynamic leadership programs and activities.  Subsequently, Dreams for Kids programs have impacted the lives of over 150,000 young people and adults.

In December 2011, CompuGain staff collaborated with and volunteered at Dreams for Kids DC’s annual giving event, Holiday for Hope.  The event provided entertainment, gifts, food, and a welcome address from Mayor Vincent Gray to 600-700 children from underprivileged, homeless, foster, and low-income families.  Through the compassion of over 200 volunteers, these children were able to enjoy and celebrate a day of joy and hope.  CompuGain’s President of Professional Services, Mark Nugent, delivered a speech on the cause and presented a laptop and a printer, on behalf of CompuGain, to a single mother and her seven children.

In late August/early September, CompuGain will be supporting Dreams for Kids DC’s Extreme Recess program held at Nationals Park in Washington D.C.  Extreme Recess partners with local professional sports team and local media to provide unique adaptive sports experiences for physically and developmentally challenged children aged 4-24.   At this upcoming adaptive sports  clinic, CompuGain staff, Dreams for Kids staff, and Nationals baseball team members will provide volunteers to engage 80-90 children in playing baseball, participating in drills, and getting National players’ autographs.  Each volunteer will be matched up with a child to promote a peer/mentorship experience during the clinic.

The shared vision is that the Extreme Recess clinic will help turn children’s adversities into opportunities in both physical and psychological aspects:  The sports activities are designed to improve respiratory capacity, circulation, heart rate, muscle tone, and quality of life and, simultaneously, fuel children’s self-efficacies and confidence in their physical potential and overall abilities.
